Eric Hooper practices in the firm’s tax section. His expertise lies in taxation, trusts and estate planning, corporate law, partnership law, probate and the administration of estates and trusts, including the preparation and filing of federal estate and gift tax returns. Eric has extensive experience in most areas of planning needed by businesses, such as the formation, organization and dissolution of entities. Eric regularly advises clients on business succession planning, including the purchase and sale of businesses and professional practices. Eric’s expertise also includes: (i) income, estate and generation skipping transfer taxation, (ii) the creation, modification and termination of trusts, (iii) mergers and acquisitions, and (iv) buy-sell agreements. 

After graduating from the United State Military Academy at West Point in 2000, Eric served as a combat infantry officer in Kosovo, Iraq and Korea. He received numerous medals and accommodations, including the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, while serving as an Infantry Captain from 2000 through 2006. He received his Juris Doctor from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 2009 and his L.L.M. in Taxation from the Levin College of Law at the University of Florida in 2010. 

Eric was one of four attorneys selected to serve as a Trust and Estates Fellow for the Real Property, Trust and Estate Section of the ABA in 2013.Eric was also selected to the 2014 Georgia list of “Rising Stars” in the area of taxation by Super Lawyers in 2014. Each year, no more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in the state are selected by the research team at Super Lawyers to receive this honor. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at the Walter F. George School of Law, Mercer University, where he teaches a course on the Taxation of Pass Through Entities. 

Eric is a member of Dougherty Circuit Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia, and the American Bar Association. Eric serves on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Southwest Georgia, and he is also a member of the Dougherty County Rotary Club. He and his family live in Cordele where he serves as a member of the Cordele Historic Preservation Commission, and are active members of Christ Episcopal Church.
